I am no mechanic either but also check your spark plug. It will also tell you if it is too lean or rich. Sounds like you have been doing things to continually richen the mixture, and you said the discs were black sooty...maybe it is too rich at this point. At any rate, I would check the plug and also as others have said clean the carb out. Good luck and keep us posted.
